A topic of debate for the Zodiac website community, should be,or has been [?],whether,or to what extent,Federal Law Enforcement ''doctors'' or disguises Zodiac evidence that is freely available for public view.
Recently,I have referred to the possibility that the pumpkin cut-out,covering the ''nether regions'' of a skeleton on The Halloween Card,is LE's doing [?].One feels that Zodiac would have shown more subtlety [?].A pumpkin's association with Halloween is,perhaps,a bit obvious [?].
Another case in point, for consideration, could be a postcard cipher, known as the 1990 Celebrity Cipher. We know it was posted in [September] 1990,on account of the Marianne Moore postage stamp employed, that was issued in that year.To all intents and purposes,it certainly looks like the work of Zodiac, and tantalizingly materializes,16 years after the last officially authenticated Zodiac missive.
Research indicates that the cipher's image, was originally obtained by the late author Lyndon Lafferty, who persuaded a desk sergeant from The Vallejo Police,to allow him access to it.When The Vallejo Times Herald received the original postcard in 1990,they had handed it over to The Vallejo Police, who then notified the FBI of its existence. On request from the FBI,The Vallejo Police made a copy to keep for themselves, passing on the original to the Federal Bureau.
So what ''we'' see is a copy of a copy. Not exactly ''high resolution'' then, but visible enough to know that, what looks like an ''M'' symbol,is disappearing behind the Marianne Moore postage stamp.Given that the postage stamp is larger than average,it does beggar the question whether there may be more symbols ''lurking'' behind that stamp [?].
Well,LE clearly do not intend to help us out on that score. What is palpably obvious,is that the FBI themselves, would have looked behind the postage stamp, since they hold physical possession of the postcard. They will know if there are more symbols to the cipher, than the 63 calculated.
The 1990 Celebrity Cipher represents,if you like,a clear cut case of the Feds ''denying'' us potential information - granted though, they are within their rights to do this.
So,what of the Halloween pumpkin ? Or indeed, any number of other ''evidence disguises'' [?].
And if it is the case that the Feds elect to do this,it gives rise to the extent of importance, attached to specific disguises [?].

If there are two pastimes that Zodiac enjoyed the most, they are his Library habituation and his passion for Motorcars and motoring. In his letters,Zodiac alludes to his automobile predilection, almost constantly - as both a ''petrolhead''[...one who likes to use a car,at the exclusion of any other means of transport..],and as a ''motorhead''[...one who likes to tinker with engines in a garage or makeshift workshop...]. Expressions employed, such as ''peeled rubber'',which originates from the sport of Drag Racing, and ''cruzeing [sic] prowl cars'',in reference to traffic cops, indicate that Zodiac held no secret of his ''car mania''. Zodiac may also have been influenced in his puzzles. In his Halloween card to Paul Avery,a symbol, believed to have been a personal interpretation of a Fred Harmon Cattle brand, appears to contain headlights. And the presumed cryptogram ''4-TEEN'' translates,by the Bell conversion table [..found on all land line phones..],to 48336 - which is the Zip code for Oakland County,Michigan, where all the wealthy car executives and designers reside. In addition, the ''By Fire'' expression, may well refer to his ''Chariot of Fire'' and motor car - a ''nod'' to the Hymn and poem,Jerusalem,by William Blake. All the serious crimes, for which Zodiac is ''wanted'' involve motorcars at the forefront of ''proceedings''.Even with the Paul Stine murder, there is a suspicion that police are not convinced of Zodiac's claim to have remained in the vicinity, and therefore had made a ''swifty'' getaway. ''Library habituator'' and motorway ''Speed freak'' - not the sort of combination, that most people would find sitting ''side by side'',readily [?]. You make good points about how the Zodiac killer alludes to his automobile predilection. That Harden had a reference book of choice [Secret and Urgent],is an interesting piece of information. Harden,of course, was a teacher with,no great claims to codes apart from a general interest. His perceived honesty is in contrast to some individuals who try to persuade us that they have a wealth of experience in cryptography. Going back to the period 1945 - 1975,when ''telex'' was king,a job description ''Codes Clerk'' was well known.Large companies would employ a small group of workers, usually from the typing pool,to send coded messages to other branches of their organization.A clerk merely had to become familiar with a company codes manual. It just happened to be a time when there was a certain paranoia about competitors.Hardly the stuff of intrigue [!]. More to the point, like Harden,it is most unlikely that Zodiac was anything more than an interested amateur in codes. I agree that Zodiac did not go ''shopping''as such, for code symbols. But it is likely that he was on the ''look out''for unique ones to add to his ''stash''.These he might come across in his liking for hanging out at libraries, where a wealth of reading options would be his for the taking [?]. Though using the term ''Phantom Library User''in jest,I believe that there is more than a ring of truth to this.Libraries represented a ''happy hunting ground''for Zodiac. The jury is out over Zodiac's actual ''Riverside Activities'',but Law Enforcement remain confident that Zodiac was the scribe of the Desk Top poem.At the very least, another example of Zodiac's library habituation [?]. I would like to find more examples of how the Zodiac killer alludes to his library habituation.

Indeed Ricardo - let us examine what there is ''on the table'',with respect to inferences of ''Library habituation'',by Zodiac :
As a possible suspect in the Cherie Jo Bates murder outside Riverside City College Library.Six months after this murder [April 1970],the Desk Top Poem was discovered at RCC Library, with its Zodiac official authentication,by LE Handwriting experts.
[ii] The 1962 Colorado Cattle Brands Book housed at the Documents wing of Berkeley University Library. Now available to view online, this book contains both the Fred Harmon Cattle Brand, believed to have influenced a Zodiac ''signature'' on the Halloween Card - and, contains the ''very specific'' Helen Roper Brown ''8-ball'' Cattle Brand, employed by Zodiac as a symbol in the ''My name is -- '' cipher.
[iii] Visits to both John F. Kennedy Library,Vallejo and Fairfield Civic Center Library,Fairfield,by the investigator and author Lyndon Lafferty, which uncovered presumed evidence of Zodiac's habituation.
On February 2nd 1968,a man made application for a library card, for the name William Joseph Grant,at the John F.Kennedy Library,Vallejo,so that he was able to borrow an LP record of ''The Mikado'' by Gilbert and Sullivan. This man signed the card '' [redacted Christian name] Grant '' for the library clerk, and proceeded to check the LP in and out nine times between February 17th 1968 and March 17th 1970.
On February 13th 1968,a man made application for a library card, for the name William Joseph Grant,at the Fairfield Civic Center Library,Fairfield,so that he was able to borrow the book ''The Code Breakers'' by David Kahn. This man signed the card '' [redacted Christian name] Grant '' for the library clerk, and proceeded to check the book in and out eleven times between May 20th 1968 and August 20th 1969.
In both cases, the man's handwriting does not match that of William Joseph Grant, and therefore is assumed by Law Enforcement, that he was an impostor - one who was impersonating William Joseph Grant.
Whether the man's handwriting matches that of Zodiac,Law Enforcement are unwilling to reveal.
So,what we appear to have ''on the table'',is possible evidence of Zodiac visiting the libraries of Riverside City College,Berkeley University,Vallejo and Fairfield.
I will reveal more information,on this subject,at a later date.

With reference to my last post here, and recent posts made on The Halloween Card thread :
The man who made application for library cards at Vallejo and Fairfield,in the name of William Joseph Grant,is clearly known to Law Enforcement to have been an impostor - but only they and Lyndon Lafferty know the Christian name signed by Mr.Grant's impersonator.
Mr.Lafferty was a generous man,but I never got that far to request of him, such information. There may be other avenues to obtain this information.
But right now,I would be inclined to put my mortgage on the name signed as : Ulysses S. Grant.

Again,with reference to this,and Halloween Card :
The Slavery/American Civil War connection is the ''real deal'' !
Don't get sidelined by Lunar Months/Astrology/Numerology ''Red Herrings'' - apart from anything,it will do your head in [!].
I have more information,already garnered,that further confirms the Confederacy/Robert R.Lee ''theory'' - but regrettably,am unable to reveal at present.However,it will come out,eventually.
It's not worth falling into the ''Pagan stuff'' trap - that's what Zodiac wanted.

On July 26th 1970,The San Francisco Chronicle received a letter from Zodiac. In this letter,Zodiac outlined what he would do to his 13 slaves if the Newspaper failed to make arrangements for their employees to wear ''Zodiac'' buttons.
These intentions, directed at his slaves, included being ''...hung by their thumbs and burned in the Sun,then I will rub them down with deep heat to warm them up.''
Of course, this claim was made, with regard to Zodiac's imaginative world - but it certainly didn't sound pleasant [!].
''Deep Heat Treatment'' is normally referred to as a medically concocted ointment, which is applied to a patient's skin,in order to relieve muscle or bone pains, through skin absorption.
Through various references to punishments inflicted on slaves, prior to the American Civil War,a very particular form of ''Deep Heat Treatment'' was quite widespread.Commonly known as ''Negro plaster'',a concoction of red pepper, ground mustard, salt and vinegar, was applied to the flesh wounds inflicted on a slave, freshly flogged.
This ''ointment'' would set hard on the wounds of the slave,so that he/she might be ready to work again, the next day.But clearly, must have been agony for an unfortunate slave,if the flogging hadn't already been so.
So,although Zodiac had a vivid and distasteful imagination,it is apparent that his intentions, with regard to his fictional slaves, had been influenced by reading about punishment meted out to ''errant'' slaves in the 19th Century.

''I like killing people because it is so much fun.It is more fun than killing wild game in the forest because man is the most dangerous animal of all.''
And so attested The Zodiac Killer,in his cipher solution, referred now as Z408.
But how much of this was the reality of Zodiac's experience, and how much was inspired by reading what others had written ?
Frederick The Great,King of Prussia and famed military tactician,is accorded the famous quote : ''Every man has a wild beast within him.''.So,this was an affirmation,if you will,of one who knew from actual experience, man's capacity to become as other creatures with a less developed brain.
Arthur Schopenhauer, the German Philosopher [1788-1860],inspired by Frederick The Great, elaborated this,in his essay ''On Human Nature'' :
''It is a fact, then, that in the heart of every man there lies a beast which waits for an opportunity to storm and rage,in its desire to inflict pain on others, and,if they stand in his way,to kill them.''.
In Schopenhauer's essay,he makes multiple references to ''Slavery and the Internal Slave Trade in the U.S. of North America.''.A work which examined many aspects of slave treatment by settlers of the ''New World'',as examples of ''base'' conditioning of a people, given a certain set of circumstances.
One example refers to the common practice of hunting down runaway slaves by slave owners and posses of hunters, motivated by financial rewards from such owners.
The following is testimony from the Reverend Horace Moulton, while residing in Georgia :
''Some obtain their living in hunting after lost slaves [runaways].The most common way is to train up young dogs to follow them. This can easily be done by obliging a slave to go out into the woods, and climb a tree, and then put the young dog on his track, and with a little assistance he can be taught to follow him to the tree, and when found,of course the dog would bark at such a game as a poor negro on a tree.
There was a man living in Savanah when I was there, who kept a large number of dogs for no other purpose than to hunt runaway negroes. And he always had enough of this work to do,for hundreds of runaways are never found, but could he get news soon after one had fled,he was almost sure to catch him.And this fear of the dogs restrains multitudes from running off.
When he went out on a hunting excursion,to be gone several days,he took several persons with him, armed generally with rifles, and followed by dogs. The dogs are true to the track of a negro,if one had passed recently,as a hound is to the track of a fox when he has found it.When the dogs draw near to their game, the slave must turn and fight them,or climb a tree.If the latter, the dogs will stay and bark until the hunters come.
The slaves frequently deceive the dogs by crossing and recrossing the creeks.Should the hunters who have no dogs, startle a slave from his hiding place, and the slave not stop at the hunter's call, the hunter will shoot at the slave,as soon as he would a deer.
Some slave masters advertise so much reward for a runaway slave, dead or alive. It undoubtedly gives the master more satisfaction to know that their property is dead, than to know that it is alive, without being able to get to it.Some slaves run away, who never mean to be taken alive.I will mention one.He ran off and was pursued by the dogs, but having a weapon with him,he succeeded in killing three of the dogs. But afterwards, the slave was shot.He had declared that he would never be taken alive.
The hunters rejoiced at the death of the slave, but lamented the death of the dogs, since they were such ravenous hunters.''

On May 8th 1974,The San Francisco Chronicle received an envelope sealed card from The Zodiac Killer.
Now referred to as ''The Citizen's Card'',Zodiac ranted at the ''inappropriateness'' of the Newspaper running advertisements for the film ''Badlands''.Written with a Biro pen,and appearing rushed and untidy, the letter, very distinctly was signed anonymously as :
A citizen
On June 24th 1859,The New York Tribune received a letter from an anonymous source.
The letter bore witness testimony that Robert E.Lee,then a Colonel in the US Army, had personally partaken in the flogging of three slaves in his care.Very distinctly, the letter was signed :
A citizen
Perhaps finally,an explanation for Zodiac's choice of ''A citizen'',as his ''calling card'',in his May 8th 1974 letter to the SF Chronicle [?].

Here is the contents of the letter, written to the Editor of The New York Tribune, and published on June 24th 1859 :
Sir : I live one mile from the plantation of George Washington P Custis, now Col.Lee's ,as Custis willed it to Lee.All the slaves on this estate,as I understand, were set free at the death of Custis, but are now held in bondage by Lee.I have inquired concerning the will, but can get no satisfaction.Custis had fifteen by his slave women.I see his grandchildren every day; they are of a dark yellow.Last week three of slaves ran away; an officer was sent after them, and overtook them nine miles this side of Pennsylvania, and brought them back.Col.Lee ordered them whipped. They were two men and one woman. The officer whipped the two men,and said he would not whip the woman, and Col.Lee stripped her and whipped her himself. These are as I learn from near relatives of the men whipped. After being whipped,he sent them to Richmond and hired them out as farm hands.
Yours,
A citizen

With reference to the letter, written by ''A citizen'' :
Naturally, the letter caused much consternation at the time. Here was,as presumed,a case of a distinguished Army officer, not only exacting a harsh punishment, but actively involving himself in physical abuse, and more particularly, his involvement specifically with regard to a woman.
At that time, there was legislation in place, with respect to corporal punishment for slaves, but it was supposed to be the exclusive domain of law officers,to carry out the punishment. So,Lee's presumed involvement caused some ''raised eyebrows'',not least since he had not behaved as ''an officer and gentleman''.
Robert E.Lee denied these allegations, and there are grounds to support his denials.Lee had never kept slaves himself. At the time,he was attempting to sort out his late father-in-law's Estate, and find work for the slaves that his father-in-law [Custis],had kept.It is true, however, that the three slaves did run away, and were subjected to corporal punishment,as was the law of the State,at that time.
But the scandal, believed or not,did no favors for Lee's reputation, and contributed to much controversy surrounding the ''Hero status'' of a great military leader - which Historians still debate,to this day.

To continue on the theme of ''A citizen'' for prospective debate :
Mr.David Oranchak,on his website, that specializes in the ciphers of The Zodiac Killer, has highlighted the case of a typed letter, with ''key'' solution to the Z480 cipher, mailed to The Vallejo Police Department,on August 10th 1969.The same day that The San Francisco Chronicle publish The Hardens' solution to Z480.
The typed letter is,as follows :
Dear Sergeant Lynch
I hope the enclosed ''key'' will prove to be beneficial to you in connection with the cipher letter writer.
Working puzzles criptograms and word puzzles is one of my pleasures. Please forgive the absence of my signature or name as I do not wish to have my name in the papers and it could be mentioned by a slip of the tongue.
With best wishes.
concerned citizen
......Well,moving forward to May 8th 1974,there is the ''now authenticated'' Citizens Card, received by The SF Chronicle, from Zodiac. It beggars the question, whether the typed letter signed ''concerned citizen'' AND the Citizens Card, signed ''A citizen'',are BOTH from Zodiac [?].
Let us examine,in more detail, the particular turn of events :
i] On August 8th 1969,at 6:35 PM,The Vallejo Police receive a call from George Murphy at The SF Chronicle, giving news that The SF Chronicle had received The Hardens' Z480 solution.
ii] August 9th 1969 - The SF Chronicle inform The Vallejo Police, that they will publish The Hardens' solution to Z480,the next day.
iii] On the morning of August 10th 1969,as promised,The SF Chronicle publish The Hardens' solution to Z480.
iv] On the same day,August 10th 1969,at 1:40 PM,Police Officer Bawart,of The Vallejo Police Department, receives a call from a Robert H. [...surname,possibly ''COON''...] of San Francisco.''Robert H.''states that he has read The Hardens' solution, published, and believes that the solution to the final 18 characters [EBEORIETEMETHHPITI] is : THE TIP I'M ROBERT E EEE.''Robert H.'' further adds that He believes that the ''four E's'' in ''THE TIP I'M ROBERT E EEE'' could mean that the original author of the cipher, has a surname, such as ''FORESE'' or ''FOURIES''.
[!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!]
v] On the next day,August 11th 1969,The Vallejo Police Department receive the typed letter, signed ''concerned citizen'',complete with a ''key'' sheet to Z480's solution. The key is very similar, but not identical to,The Hardens' solution key.
vi] Moving forward, nearly five years,to May 8th 1974,The SF Chronicle receive The Citizen Card, signed ''A citizen''.
So,given a ''Robert E Lee'' connection to ''A citizen'' and ''Robert H.,from San Francisco'',was the author of The Citizen Card and the caller to Officer Bawart of The Vallejo Police, the same person - Zodiac ?
And,given the similarity in signature,of ''A citizen'' and ''concerned citizen'',was the author of The Citizen Card and typed letter c/w ''key'',the same person - Zodiac ?
Indeed, was ''A citizen'' AND ''Robert H.'' AND ''concerned citizen'' - ALL the same person - THE ZODIAC KILLER ?

Post by Rubislaw32 on Oct 9, 2016 8:41:56 GMT -8
As highlighted in my previous post,The Vallejo Police's first caller,following Don Harden's 408 solution publication,by The San Francisco Chronicle,was ''a certain'' Robert H. from S.F. with his suggestion,ROBERT E EEE,as a solution to a presumed postscript,ending the 408.
Though first ''redacted'',in a police report,it finally emerged that Robert H.'s ''claimed'' surname was ''COON''.
One must assume that the Vallejo or SF Police had checked on a Mr.R.H.Coon,and had cleared him,as well as obtaining permission to make public, his surname, since it later emerged, that Mr.Coon lived at 345 Hyde Street,S.F.,and was an artist and mystic, with a cult following.Perhaps,Mr.Coon felt that a little publicity, might not be a bad thing for business [?].
As is now apparent,Mr.Coon went on to have a reasonably successful career as a mystic philosopher, and published author, loosely based on his theory of the ''Chakra Terrestrial '' in 1967.
This ''Chakra Terrestrial'' represented the embodiment of pagan forces, for the good, and was influenced by work carried out by British artist, and mystic,Katherine Maltwood,in the 1930's.
The spiritual heart of this ''loving'' Chakra was Glastonbury,in England, and the land that denoted it,was called ''The Glastonbury Zodiac''.
There is even a Christian inclusion,to this spiritual philosophy, with the 12 days of Christmas being allocated to the 12 signs of the Zodiac. So,perhaps a mysticism that accommodates the belief in one God,and many gods,at the same time [?].
What,appears apparent then,that the ''Robert H.'',who originally phoned the Vallejo Police,was a ''fraud'',who was just using Mr.Coon's name,as a ruse.
Now.....here's the really ''coincidental'' part :
It emerges that when police recovered items from the taxi cab of Paul Stine, following his murder,it included Mr.Stine's book for recording fares. And,the last fare recorded by Paul Stine, was take at 345 Hyde Street [!].In other words, officially, the address of the last person Mr.Stine dropped off.
Since we can safely say, that this was not ''the real'' Mr.Coon [...he was cleared by the police..],just who was this person ?
I would suggest the possibility that ''Zodiac'',a passenger in Mr.Stine's taxi, requested to be dropped off at 345 Hyde Street. When they arrived,Zodiac paid Mr.Stine his fare - then faked a sudden decision to travel further, requesting this of Mr.Stine, and handing over extra cash,in advance.
So,initially, when the police found Paul Stine's fare book, suspicions must have first fallen on ''the real'' Mr.R.H.Coon.
Later,it must have become, all too apparent to the police that Zodiac had been the first caller, following SF Chronicle's publication of the 408 solution, claiming that the final part of the solution was ROBERT E EEE.
In both cases of the 408's publication [August 1969],and murder of Paul Stine [October 1969],the presumed same person was involved.
A man who desired to be mistaken for the artist and mystic Robert.H.Coon,and most likely, with real identity,''THE ZODIAC KILLER''.

As a postscript to my previous post, here is some food for thought :
Why did the perpetrator take the time to rifle through Paul Stine's ''personals'',to remove Stine's wallet ?
i]To steal Paul Stine's money.
Or
ii]To make the the real crime, have appearance of motive,as robbery...though is apparent,in hindsight,it was simply ''clinical execution''.
There is a further reason,I would suggest :
Paul Stine, now had in his personal possession,at least one banknote, given to him,by his perpetrator.Since,at 345 Hyde Street, the perpetrator, wanted to make the appearance of suddenly changing his mind, about ultimate destination, the perpetrator had handed over cash,in advance, for the purposes of ''seemingly'' goodwill. The perpetrator needed to remove Stine's wallet,in order to ''re-acquire'' a banknote, which would have his fingerprints.
Why did Stine's perpetrator elect not to remove Stine's fare book ?
Because the perpetrator knew that details of the last fare [...345 Hyde Street...],would be traced back to the ''real'' Mr.R.H.Coon.
Given that Zodiac murdered Paul Stine, what is quite ''harrowing'' to contemplate,is that the detail ''345 Hyde Street'' represented yet another ''twist'' in Zodiac's cannon of ''twisted humor''.
Zodiac knew, eventually, that the police would realize the ''ROBERT E EEE'' phone call connection.
Zodiac appears to have had so much ''pre-planned'' - including an extra laugh,at the expense of the police.

And so,following on from the last post, once the police realized that Zodiac had, more than likely, have been the caller referring to himself,as Mr.R.H.Coon,they would have started to analyse the contents of that ''ruse'' caller, who also appeared to be the murderer of Paul Stine.
It wouldn't have taken a chimpanzee to work out that ''ROBERT E EEE'' was a play on ''ROBERT E LEE'' - the famous confederate general.Such details as ''Boo'',Southern Cross, and ''To kill a Mockingbird'' inferences,in the Halloween Card would become all too clear. Then, with growing ''local'' suspicions about W.J.Grant being Zodiac, and sharing the same surname as General Lee's adversary U.S.GRANT,with W.J.Grant undoubtedly protesting his innocence mitigating persecution,by stealth.More things than we,the public, realize. And later, with Lyndon Lafferty's discovery of the library cards at Fairfield and Vallejo,by someone, impersonating Grant.
The cars,of course, that we don't know about, registered to Grant,''impersonated'' by Zodiac in his crimes.Lafferty also found out that someone claiming to be W.J.Grant made two attempts in one day,to apply for a Driver's Licence in the name of W.J.Grant.
The realization,by the police, after being subjected to a restraining order, from bothering W.J.Grant,following the ''Judge Sherwin'' incident, that Zodiac saw himself as ''Robert E.Lee'' locking horns with Grant, whom Zodiac saw as ''Ulysses S.Grant''.All these things and, probably, many more, that we don't know about.
Later,I will document a sad tale, that took place, with regard to Marion, wife of W.J.Grant,following Grant securing his court order, protecting him from public harassment,of any kind. The one person,it seems, that W.J.Grant did confide in,eventually, was his wife.
In the meantime,I will leave you with this thought :
Both Robert E.Lee and Ulysses S.Grant shared the same hero : Fredrick The Great,King of Prussia and famed military tactician.
